If you are wondering about how to find creative writing ideas for kids that don’t make it seem like you are asking them to write an essay for school then you are in the right place.
Making it seem like ‘work’ is not the approach to take if you want your kid to enjoy creativity. Above all, creativity should be enjoyable and fun. If your child is not enjoying the activity you should find something else they do enjoy – even if you are enjoying it, or if you really ‘want’ them to do it.
Each child is different and there will be activities they enjoy more than others and some they really don’t like at all. Remember back to when you were a child. Did you enjoy the activities you were made/forced/over-encouraged to do?
This idea combines two activities that both children and adults enjoy. Keeping a scrapbook and making things up.
Assemble the following items:
- A scrapbook.
- Old magazines and newspapers,
- Scissors
- Glue (for sticking paper)
- Notebook
- Pen/pencil
Have your child look carefully through the magazines or newspapers and tell them to find their favourite picture of an animal or person.
Next, get them to cut out their picture and glue it into the scrapbook.
Focus their attention on the picture and get them to write down why this is their favourite picture.
Then guide them through the exercise questions below, or if you want them to try it on their own then you can print a version of the activity for them to do alone here on this page.
HOW TO FIND CREATIVE WRITING IDEAS FOR KIDS
1. Write down the name of the animal or person – this is now your own character. A character you write about in a story can be a human, animal, a tree, fish, and a creature from outer space – anything or anybody you want.
2. Pretend your character has a problem and write down what you think that problem is.
3. This is now your story – when something happens to a character or they have a problem it is called a story. Stories are all about solving problems.
4. Write down what your character does to solve her problem.
5. Write down if your character manages to solve the problem.
6.Write down what you think happens then.
7. When you have finished all that make sure you write this down in big bright letters:
